Top 5 Reasons to drink Pure Simple Juice…

Why we all could use a little more Pure Simple Juice

* Living enzymes. Made fresh our juice has not been pasteurized therefore you benefit from all of the living enzymes that promote health and good digestion.
* Organic produce. No need to add more pesticides and chemicals into your body, we use all organic or grown-with organic practice ingredients.
* Support local farmers. As we got our start at the market much of our produce comes from farmers at the market & surrounding area to bring you the season’s best Oregon/Washington produce.
* You need more fruits & vegetables in your life. As most of us do! Each bottle of juice provides you literally pounds of fresh fruits & vegetables(estimated 3-4 servings of produce). So you get a huge load of antioxidant, vitamin & mineral goodness with every sip.
* It is amazingly delicious. Our juice is hand-pressed in small batches, I’ll just let the juice speak for itself.

It’s the week of decadence.

Inspired by some warmer weather and sunshine, Pure Simple Juice is in the mood for some pure deliciousness. So we did a little playing around with new ingredients and recipes and are bringing a few exciting new blends to the market this week.

At the Market:
carrot, apple, beet
wild blackberry, lemon, apple, ginger
chocolate almond milk

If you too feel inspired by the sunshine and want to try a delicious dessert, use any leftover juice (this is the tough part) to make a batch of granita. A fantastic and of course, healthish summer treat.

Basic Granita
Refreshing in flavor and easy to make, granita (pronounced grah-NEE-tah) is popular throughout Italy.  These ices are a mixture of water, sugar and a flavoring. They are grainy in texture and are frozen in a pan in the freezer.  The goal when making granita is to create coarse granular crystals or flakes of ice; you are not trying to create a smooth mixture such as a sorbet, which is made in an ice cream maker.

Basic Recipe:
2 cups Pure Simple Juice, any flavor you like
½ cup sugar

Choose a large, shallow pan (8 x 12 x 2-inches) that allows the mixture to spread out.  While you are assembling the recipe, place the empty pan and your stirring fork in the freezer to chill.  Also chill the glasses you will be using to serve the granita in later.

Pour the mixture into the pan and place in the freezer.  Every 30 minutes, using a fork, stir the granita, scraping it off the bottom and sides of the pan.  Break up the frozen parts near the edges into smaller chunks and rake them toward the center.  Continue to freeze and break up ice crystals until completely frozen, about 3 hours.  If at any time the granita freezes too hard, simply leave it out at room temperature for a few minutes until it softens enough to be
stirred again with a fork. Then return it to the freezer.

Check your granita mixture 20-30 minutes before serving to make sure that you can scoop the surface with a spoon.  If it is too firm, let it stand at room temperature until serving time.  To serve, scrape across the top of the frozen mixture with a large spoon.  Granita is usually served in chilled footed dessert dishes, goblets, or wine glasses.  For a finishing touch, top with a small cookies, berries, lemon zest, or a sprig of mint.

The Juice News 03

Hello from Pure Simple Juice!

On a few occasions recently some dear friends and supporters have said to me “you need to tell people about the nutritional benefit of your juices”. As a dietitian, I have kind of left the juices to speak for themselves in taste and then have enjoyed the fact (perhaps silently) that I am bringing some amazing nutrition into people’s diets.

However, since we are now officially in the summer season and the weather is just about at a transition point, and many an allergy-ridden person is suffering the change, I think now is a good time to share a little about the health benefits of Pure Simple Juice.

Each blend is unique in it’s nutrition properties but one thing they all have in common is that I use the freshest and most local produce I can find. For example, I typically pick up produce from Groundworks Organics or Persephone Farms (both Portland Farmer’s Market vendors) on the day before I juice, all based on what is in season that week. Then I madly juice all Thursday morning before the market. That way, the time from when the produce was picked, juiced and reaches you is merely hours in the grand scheme of things and still contains the greatest amount of nutrients possible.

More About This week’s Juice blends

True Green: Cucumber, Spinach, Mint, Lime, Blue Green Algae. This juice is full of green power. It includes immune-boosting and healing nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Folic Acid and a variety of antioxidants. The spinach gives your body’s immune system an extra boost while the cucumber, rich in silica, helps your hair, nails and skin stay healthy. And to top it off a little blue green algae, Earth’s brain food which can help with mental clarity, concentration and is a general mood-booster.

AppleCuCarrot: A delicious blend of apple, cucumber, and carrot. Interesting and healthy. Again the cucumber good for your hair, skin, nails while the carrot loads you up with beta-carotene, great too for your hair, skin, nails and for your eyes.

Almond Milk: Almond, pumpkin seed, date, maple syrup, cinnamon. Almonds are a health-supportive food that help to alkalize the body (balance the body’s pH) and contain calcium. Pumpkin seeds provide a valuable source of Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and are natural vermifuge (anti-worm). Dates and maple syrup add sweetness while cinnamon is a beneficial preservative and spice. Health benefits of cinnamon vary from slowing cancer cell growth to reducing inflammation. For those who are truly allergy ridden, we’ll make just a few with almonds, dates, local honey and bee pollen. To help your body build it’s immunity against those allergens we are now surrounded by.

Pre-order your juices NOW by sending us an email! And of course, if you’d like a special personalized blend, let us know. The options of delicious juice combinations is endless (nearly).

See you at the Market!

We made it in the blog

Pure Simple Juice receives a lovely shout out in the Portland Farmers Market Blog today!

All in the Name

Purely Delicious
By Laura Harrison
It seems that no matter how many times I go to the farmers market, I continue to be amazed by the diversity of vendors. The local company Pure Simple Juice, a new addition to theNorthwest Market, is no exception as they offer a product different from anything I’ve seen this season. After visiting with the owners of the company last week, and trying their creations, I was pleasantly surprised by just how good a natural, nutrient-dense juice could taste. The experience has definitely motivated me to consider juicing myself, though I don’t know that I could replicate their perfectly concocted and delicious flavor combinations.
It was not only the tasty drinks that make me want to try juicing though. After speaking with one of the owners, registered dietician Dulcinea Ward, I learned about the health benefits of juicing raw products. She explained to me that there are 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables in one 16-ounce bottle of Pure Simple Juice, making the juices a great way to quickly consume lots of nutrients. After sampling the juice, I found it refreshing (and guilt reducing) to hear that something that tasted that delicious was also extremely good for me.
What I also realized about Pure Simple Juice was that the name makes for the best descriptor of the concept. The juices really are pure and simple. Dulcinea and her partner Daniel Childs utilize the best products straight from farmers, mix them in just the right quantities to create delicious flavors, and add very little else. The names of the juices are also pure and simple, since they are literally the names of the ingredients. When you pick up apple/strawberry/beet, there are no questions to be asked about what is in the juice.
Simply Adorable
Dulcinea explained to me the importance of being present at the market. As a new company, she finds it helpful to explain the concept to customers, and to talk to farmers about their products and find inspiration from seasonal produce. It’s only fitting that Pure Simple Juice is a market vendor, as the juices are a good way to showcase the best of the season. Duclinea and Daniel also mentioned that they are working on new methods of utilizing their produce scraps. I look forward to seeing what these two come up with (I heard something about fruit leathers and apple cider vinegar), because if the juices are any indication of their ideas, everything else will be equally as tasty.
Another unique aspect of Pure Simple Juice is that the company offers classes about juice cleanses as well as a service that provides everything necessary for a healthy and detoxifying cleanse. Even though I always knew the health benefits of juice cleanses, my love for solid food previously prevented me from trying one. Now with Pure Simple Juice around, it seems like it could be a much easier time.
For more information on Pure Simple Juice visit their booth at the  Northwest Market located at NW 19th Ave and NW Everett Street, Thursdays from 3pm – 7pm or
